Industrial Visit to Himalaya Drug Company by MSc Clinical Research and MSc Pharmacoepidemiology students
Students from MSc Clinical Research and MSc Pharmacoepidemiology at the Department of Clinical Research, Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), SRHU, went on an industrial visit to The Himalaya Drug Company in Subhash Nagar, Dehradun, on 21st May 2025.
The visit was guided by Dr. Nikku Yadav, In-Charge of the Department, and Dr. Manisha Sharma, Assistant Professor. A group of 16 students took part in this learning experience.
Founded in 1930, The Himalaya Drug Company is well-known for making pharmaceutical products, herbal medicines, and wellness goods. The purpose of this visit was to help students understand how the pharmaceutical industry works — from making medicines to checking their quality and following safety rules.
The visit started with a short film that shared the company’s history, goals, and global reach. After that, students were divided into small groups and taken on a tour of the factory.
In the Production Area, students got to see how tablets and capsules are made, including granulation, compression, coating, and packaging. They also saw modern machines used for each step.
Next, they visited the Quality Control Laboratory, where they saw high-end machines like HPLC and UV-Vis spectrophotometers. Experts explained how medicines are tested during and after production to make sure they are safe and effective.
A walk through the Herbal Garden introduced students to medicinal plants used in Ayurvedic products. They learned how certain plants are chosen for their active ingredients to treat health problems.
The tour also included a visit to the Himalaya Ayurveda & Bioscience Museum. It had old and new models of machines used in medicine-making, interactive displays, and a section dedicated to Mr. Mohammad Manal, the founder of the company.
A highlight of the visit was an interactive session with Dr. S. Farooq, the President of The Himalaya Drug Company. Dr. Farooq shared helpful tips about career opportunities in research and the pharmaceutical industry. He also spoke about the skills students should develop to succeed in this field.
This visit gave students a close look at how the industry works. It helped them understand real-world practices like Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), quality control, and regulatory rules that keep medicines safe.
