CME on "Approach to a Case of Alleged Sexual Assault" at HIMS

On May 11, 2024, the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences hosted a CME to commemorate the 3rd National Forensic Medicine Day. The event was a collaborative effort between the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and the Department of Psychiatry.

Dr. Harvinder Singh Chhabra and Dr. Pragya from the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology discussed common mistakes to avoid in cases of sexual assault and provided insights on drafting reports for such cases. Dr. Aanchal Agarwal from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology elaborated on the proper methods for collecting samples in these sensitive situations. Dr. Priyaranjan Avinash from the Department of Psychiatry emphasized the importance of addressing the psychological trauma associated with sexual assault cases.

The speakers underscored the significance of following best practices in handling cases of alleged sexual assault, emphasizing sensitivity, accuracy, and thoroughness in investigations and reporting. The event also included a poster competition for MBBS students, who showcased their understanding and awareness of forensic medicine principles related to sexual assault cases.

The CME provided valuable insights and guidance on navigating the complexities of cases involving alleged sexual assault, serving as a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge sharing among professionals from different medical specialties.
