Medical students and faculty taught to manage stress in healthy ways at HIMS, SRHU

Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, Swami Rama Himalayan University, Dehradun has initiated a stress management program for postgraduate medical students and faculty.

The first interactive lecture was organized on 4th May 2024 with Dr. Priyaranjan Avinash, Prof. & Head of Psychiatry, as the speaker, while the second was held on 13th May 2024.

Dr. Avinash began by defining “Stress” and emphasized that it is rampant, with each of us experiencing it differently based on our ability to handle it. Chronic stress can cause physical symptoms such as fatigue, palpitations, headaches, insomnia, irritability, poor memory, and concentration. He highlighted how long-term stress in medical education and healthcare can lead to burnout, addiction, depression, and even suicide among healthcare workers. He concluded with practical stress management activities including assertiveness, breathing exercises, maintaining routine, sleep hygiene, proper diet and exercise, social connectedness, yoga and meditation, journaling, and spirituality.

Prof. Ashok Deorari, Principal of Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, shared his wisdom and past experiences, emphasizing the role of exercise, regular walking, avoiding addictions, and adopting good hobbies. He concluded by saying, “A healthy body only can have a healthy mind,” stressing that physicians must keep themselves healthy to treat their patients effectively.

Prof. Renu Dhasmana, Vice Principal (Administration) of Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, focused on the role of a proper diet and adequate rest for students and faculty in dealing with stress. She also conducted an interactive session, encouraging faculties and students to share their suggestions, feedback, and ideas.

The program will include small group exercises featuring breathing exercises and deep relaxation techniques.
