M. Sc. Biochemistry

M. Sc. Biochemistry

Programme Level

Postgraduate

Duration

2 Years

Overview

The M.Sc. Biochemistry program aims to develop the young students' minds to question, seek, and understand the molecular basis of life, and it integrates concepts such as biomolecular structure, enzymology, metabolism, molecular biology, and cellular regulation. The program fosters scientific aptitude in students and encourages them to engage in research within the field of biochemistry. The course will provide a solid foundation for all the students regardless of background, and they will gain a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of biochemistry at an advanced level, including clinical and research aspects, with special attention to current developments in the discipline. By the end of the course, students will gain expertise in the latest biochemical techniques and learn the applications of the basic science to the field of modern research.

The curriculum covers core areas such as biomolecular structure and function, enzymology, metabolism, bioenergetics, molecular biology, genetic engineering, immunochemistry, and cell signaling. Emphasis is placed on understanding biochemical pathways and their relevance to health, disease, and biotechnology. Emerging areas such as proteomics, genomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics, and systems biology are also introduced to align students with current scientific advancements.

A key strength of the M.Sc. Biochemistry program is its strong laboratory component. Students receive hands-on training in advanced biochemical, molecular, and analytical techniques. The program includes seminars, project work, and a dissertation, enabling students to engage in independent research and gain exposure to real-world scientific challenges.

Programme Objective

During the M.Sc. Biochemistry program, students will acquire a comprehensive understanding and solid foundation in biology and chemistry. They will also gain advanced knowledge in clinical biochemistry, industrial biochemistry, molecular genetics principles, the nature of chemical reactions, and health-related issues. After completing the course, students will cultivate analytical and critical-thinking skills that enable them to independently explore biological phenomena using the scientific method. They will also be equipped to employ modern techniques for biochemical experimentation within the fields of biology and chemistry and will be able to understand the interdisciplinary nature of biochemistry and to integrate knowledge of chemistry, physics, and other disciplines into a wide variety of biochemical issues for industries, product development, and quality control and will learn the practical-based laboratory skills needed to design, safely conduct, and interpret biochemical research.

The student shall be eligible for admission to a M.Sc. Biochemistry Program after he/she has successfully completed a three-year B.Sc. undergraduate degree with Microbiology/Biotechnology/ Environmental sciences/Botany/Zoology/Chemistry/Medical Lab. Technology as one of the subjects or earned with not less than 50% marks or equivalent grade prescribed number of credits or through the examinations conducted by university as equivalent to an undergraduate degree.

Biochemistry is a career oriented, high demand fundamental course with applications in all biological research, be it plants, animal, human and microbes. Students can peruse basic research work in research institutes or universities by qualifying various exams for research fellowships. Students can also work in pharmaceutical and applied biotechnological fields. It provides opportunity to students to develop their career in the following positions/areas:

Prof Rakesh Kumar

Prof Rakesh Kumar is the Founder and President of the Breast Cancer in Young Women Foundation (USA), dedicated to vaddressing the distinct issues affecting young women with breast cancer. He also serves as the International Endowed Chair Professor at the Cancer Research Institute of the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences. Additionally, he holds adjunct professorships at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr Kumar earned his Ph.D. from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1984 and began his research career at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in January 1986. From 1988 to 2017, he held various academic and leadership positions —including faculty member, tenured professor, distinguished professor, endowed chair, department chair, and research leader—at esteemed institutions such as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. From 2017 to 2022, he served as the National Chair for Cancer Research for the Government of India and as a distinguished professor, continuing his innovative work in breast cancer research.

With nearly 40 years of research and professional experience, Dr. Kumar has made conceptual contributions to the field of cancer research (h-index 108, citations >50,000). He has authored over 325 peer-reviewed publications, edited or co-edited nine books, and delivered 290 invited lectures worldwide. His work has been featured on the covers of 18 major cancer journals and has been highlighted in institutional research reports of the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

A passionate educator and mentor, Dr. Kumar has guided 67 trainees throughout his career. He serves on the editorial boards of multiple leading cancer journals and has served on the editorial boards of 21 top cancer journals. His global reputation is further demonstrated by his participation in about 100 peer-review panels for cancer research funding in the US and internationally over the past 28 years.
