Inauguration of Learning Disability OPD at Himalayan Hospital, SRHU

In a significant stride towards inclusive and integrated healthcare for children with special needs, the Learning Disability OPD was inaugurated at the Department of Neurology, Himalayan Hospital, Jolly Grant. The initiative is a joint effort by the Rural Development Institute (RDI) and Himalayan Hospital, both of which have been working collaboratively for years to promote health and community-based rehabilitation for individuals with special needs.

This newly launched OPD is dedicated to supporting children facing challenges in learning skills, with the goal of connecting them to the mainstream education system. The inauguration ceremony was graced by the Hon’ble President Dr. Vijay Dhasmana and Vice Chancellor Dr. Rajendra Dobhal, who formally inaugurated the OPD.

The Learning Disability OPD aims to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment through a multidisciplinary approach. It brings together specialists in Neurology, Paediatrics, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Psychiatry, ENT, Vision, Orthopaedics, Clinical Linguistics, and other allied fields. Services offered will include assessment, counselling, therapy, medication, IQ testing, and regular follow-ups.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Vijay Dhasmana emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and integrated care, highlighting how such an approach can bring transformative, long-term benefits to children and support their inclusion in the mainstream academic framework.

Head of the Department of Neurology, Dr. Deepak Goel described the OPD as a much-needed initiative that offers both specialized and comprehensive care for children requiring multidimensional support.

The event was attended with enthusiasm by the Medical Superintendents, Dean, and heads of various departments including Neurology, Clinical Psychology, Psychiatry, and representatives from SRHU School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Science & Technology, School of Management Studies, School of Biosciences, as well as the Director and Deputy Director of RDI, along with RDI staff.

In addition to clinical services, the Learning Disability OPD will also serve as a centre for awareness and advocacy, aimed at caregivers and educators to promote inclusive educational practices. The OPD will operate regularly, with specialist-led integrated sessions every Wednesday, offering families access to holistic, collaborative care in a single location—significantly enhancing convenience and impact for children and their caregivers.
