HSMS Organizes Cancer Awareness Lecture in Collaboration with CRI, SRHU

On 6th November 2024, the Himalayan School of Management Studies (HSMS), Swami Rama Himalayan University, organized an insightful and socially relevant guest lecture on “Cancer Awareness.” The session was conducted at KLT-2 and KLT-4 and witnessed active participation from 91 students of BBA and B.Com, Semester I. The lecture aimed to equip students with crucial knowledge about cancer, including its causes, symptoms, prevention, treatment options, and the importance of palliative care.

The session brought together three distinguished speakers from the Cancer Research Institute (CRI), SRHU, Dehradun—Dr. Abhishek Kandwal, Professor & Head of Dental Surgery and Deputy Medical Superintendent; Dr. Anmol, Assistant Professor, Radiation Oncology; and Ms. Sukhwinder Kaur, Supportive Palliative Care Nurse. Together, they offered a multi-dimensional view of cancer, addressing both medical and emotional aspects of the disease. Dr. Kandwal highlighted the connection between oral health and cancer, particularly focusing on lifestyle-related risks and prevention. Dr. Anmol elaborated on the advancements in radiation oncology and emphasized how early intervention significantly improves treatment outcomes. Ms. Kaur shared the human perspective of cancer care, underlining the importance of empathy, dignity, and psychological support through palliative nursing.

The session featured visual presentations and interactive discussions that made the subject matter accessible and engaging for students. It helped dispel common myths and encouraged a fact-based understanding of cancer and its management. The speakers also emphasized the role of youth in community health and the importance of self-examinations, regular screenings, and spreading awareness in society.

The Q&A session that followed the presentations saw students raise thoughtful queries related to early signs of cancer, screening procedures, the psychological aspects of care, and healthy lifestyle habits that can aid in prevention. The resource persons responded with practical insights and encouraged students to take responsibility for their own health and well-being.

This guest lecture proved to be both educational and transformational. It not only deepened the students’ understanding of cancer as a critical health issue but also instilled in them a sense of empathy and social responsibility. The session served as a vital step in bridging classroom learning with real-world health awareness, reinforcing the importance of informed, compassionate, and proactive citizenship.
