The Department of Clinical Research at the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, Swami Rama Himalayan University, hosted a lecture on Emotional Intelligence on August 8, 2024, led by Dr. Ekta Rao. Held within the department itself, the session saw enthusiastic participation from 18 students and was designed to delve into the essential role of emotional intelligence (EQ) in everyday life, especially in professional and interpersonal settings.
Dr. Rao began by distinguishing between Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and Emotional Quotient (EQ), emphasizing that while IQ reflects cognitive abilities, EQ pertains to one’s ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions—both one’s own and those of others. The lecture explored the critical importance of EQ in areas such as stress management, empathetic communication, relationship building, and conflict resolution.
Through real-life examples and practical strategies, Dr. Rao guided participants on how to cultivate self-awareness, improve emotional regulation, and develop empathy. She illustrated how higher emotional intelligence leads to better mental well-being, stronger workplace performance, and more meaningful relationships. The session also addressed common challenges in emotional regulation and offered actionable insights to overcome them.
The outcomes of the lecture were significant. Participants gained a deeper appreciation of EQ, learned how to manage emotions more constructively, and understood its direct impact on both personal growth and professional success. The tools and techniques shared during the session empowered attendees to begin their journey towards emotional mastery.
In essence, the lecture provided a thoughtful, interactive space for self-reflection and skill-building, reinforcing the message that emotional intelligence is not just a soft skill but a vital life competency.
