On 11th December 2024, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Himalayan School of Science and Technology (HSST), Swami Rama Himalayan University, organized a field visit for first-semester B.Tech students from the CSE, AI&ML, DS&ML, and Cyber Security branches. This visit was a part of their Environmental Studies course (HST112) and took place at the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) located within the SRHU campus. The STP plays a vital role in treating wastewater generated from the university hospital, hostels, and residential blocks, making it an ideal site for students to observe real-world applications of environmental engineering concepts.
Approximately 70 students participated in the visit, which aimed to connect theoretical learning with practical environmental infrastructure. Under the guidance of Dr. Ashutosh Kumar Choudhary, Course Coordinator for Environmental Studies, students explored various components of the STP such as the primary sedimentation tank, aeration chambers, secondary sedimentation tank, and sand and activated charcoal filters. They observed the visible differences between untreated and treated wastewater, offering them a clear understanding of the treatment process and its significance in maintaining ecological balance.
The students actively engaged in the learning process by asking questions, taking notes, and capturing photographs for use in their assignments and reports. The visit significantly contributed to their environmental awareness and understanding of sustainable practices. Furthermore, it provided a valuable opportunity to develop observation, documentation, and analytical skills, reinforcing the relevance of environmental studies in the context of engineering education.
