Overview

The M.Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry programme is a two year – four semester programmes. The programme intends to expand and deepen student’s knowledge in the topic areas such as medicinal chemistry, chemistry of natural products, pharmaceutical analysis, drug synthesis, instrumental methods, biochemistry, and regulatory/quality assurance topics.

Student will gain deeper understanding of the subject and flair of research through lectures, laboratory sessions, assignments, seminars, and project works. This programme combines theory, practical and project work to develop skills in demand by pharmaceutical industry, or for further research opportunities.

This multi-disciplinary course run by the School of Biosciences with an association with the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. This contains 60 % input from biological science and 40% from pharmaceutical sciences. The Postgraduate degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry holds good Industrial & Academic potential.

The M.Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry course at the School of Biosciences, SRHU, has been designed based on learning outcome-based curriculum framework (LOCF) motto. The course covers the fundamental and advanced areas of Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemistry and Pharmacy with a range of core subjects in each semester. Along with providing the traditional biotechnology knowledge, the course also has enough scope for inter- and multi-disciplinary subjects in the form of electives. This course also caters the skill enhancement needs of the students as well as provides opportunity for collaboration and learning from other disciplines in the form of general elective courses, and thus enabling the students to broaden their horizon in complementary subjects. Every semester has a practical course for strengthening their skills in designing and conducting experiments in the field of pharmaceutical chemistry. The six-month dissertation in the last semester orients and prepares the students for research and development in academia and industry.

Programme Objective

M.Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry programs aim to equip students with advanced knowledge in drug design, synthesis, and analysis. These objectives focus on bridging chemistry with pharmaceutical applications to prepare graduates for industry, research, or further studies.

Programs emphasize understanding chemical principles utilising drug development, including molecular mechanisms of drug action and structure-activity relationships. Students gain skills in instrumental analysis, quality control, and formulation chemistry to support new drug discovery.

Training covers laboratory techniques for organic synthesis, pharmacokinetics, and stability studies of drug substances. Graduates develop research abilities, such as experimental design and data interpretation, alongside regulatory awareness for pharmaceutical practices.

The student shall be eligible for admission to a Master’s Degree Program in Pharmaceutical Chemistry after he/she has successfully completed a three-year B.Sc. or B.Pharm. undergraduate degree with chemistry as one of the subjects or earned with not less than 50% marks or equivalent grade prescribed number of credits or through the examinations conducted by university as equivalent to an undergraduate degree.

MSc Pharmaceutical Chemistry graduates can pursue diverse careers in pharmaceuticals, research, quality assurance, and regulatory sectors, leveraging skills in drug synthesis, analysis, and molecular drug design. Opportunities span industry, academia, government, and emerging fields like biotech and environmental monitoring.

  • Research chemist, medicinal chemist, quality control analyst, and formulation scientist in pharmaceutical companies.
  • Regulatory affairs specialists.
  • Roles such as research scientist, analytical chemist, or clinical research associate involve designing new molecules, conducting trials, and optimizing formulations in R&D labs.
  • Pharmacovigilance and drug safety.
  • Teaching at universities and colleges, alongside pursuing Ph.Ds.
  • Government jobs include quality control officers at agencies like FSSAI.
  • Environmental chemists.
  • Sales/marketing roles like medical science liaison.
