Overview

The M.Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry programme is a two year – four semester programme. The programme intends to expand and deepen student’s knowledge in the main topic areas such as inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry and theoretical chemistry. Student will gain deeper understanding of the subject and flair of research through lectures, laboratory sessions, assignments, seminars and project works. This programme combines theory, practical and project work to develop skills in demand by industry, or prepare for further research study.

This multi-disciplinary course run by the School of Biosciences with an association with the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. This contains 60 % input from biological science and 40% from pharmaceutical Sciences. The Postgraduate degree in MSc Pharmaceutical Chemistry holds good Industrial & Academic potential.

The M.Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry course at the School of Biosciences, SRHU, has been designed on the basis of learning outcome-based curriculum framework (LOCF) motto. The course covers the fundamental and advanced areas of Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemistry and Pharmacy with a range of core subjects in each semester. Along with providing the traditional biotechnology knowledge, the course also has enough scope for inter- and multi-disciplinary subjects in the form of electives. This course also caters the skill enhancement needs of the students as well as provides opportunity for collaboration and learning from other disciplines in the form of general elective courses, and thus enabling the students to broaden their horizon in complementary subjects. Every semester has a practical course for strengthening their skills in designing and conducting experiments in the field of Biochemistry. The six-month dissertation in the last semester orients and prepares the students for research and development in academia and industry

Programme Objective

The objective of the Master’s Program in Microbiology is to equip the students to gain bimolecular knowledge and analytical skills at an advanced level. The program emphasizes to apply knowledge acquired about prokaryotic and eukaryotic cellular processes, interaction of microorganisms among themselves, with physical and chemical agents and higher order organisms in environment and biological systems to various conditions. Students will be able to address broad range of fields including biopolymer chemistry, marine biochemistry, environmental biotechnology, food science, microbiology, microbial genetics, molecular biology and systems biology

The student shall be eligible for admission to a Master’s Degree Program in Pharmaceutical

Chemistry after he/she has successfully completed a three year B.Sc or B.Pharm. undergraduate degree with chemistry as one of the subject or earned with not less than 50% marks or equivalent grade prescribed number of credits or through the examinations conducted by University as equivalent to an undergraduate degree.

Pharmaceutical chemistry is a career oriented, high demand fundamental course with applications in all biological research, be it plants, animal, human and microbes. Students can peruse basic research work in research institutes or universities by qualifying various exams for research fellowships.
