B. Sc. Microbiology / B.Sc. (Hons.) Microbiology / B.Sc. (Hons) Microbiology with Research
Programme Level
Undergraduate
Duration
4 Years
Overview
The B.Sc. Microbiology (three years and four years program) is designed to provide a strong foundation in the study of microorganisms and their roles in health, industry, agriculture, and the environment. Program introduces students to the fundamental principles of microbiology while integrating concepts from biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and biotechnology. It aims to develop scientific understanding, practical competence, and analytical skills essential for careers in life sciences.
The curriculum covers core subjects such as general microbiology, microbial diversity, bacteriology, virology, mycology, phycology, immunology, microbial genetics, and basic molecular biology. Students also learn about medical microbiology, environmental microbiology, food and dairy microbiology, and industrial microbiology, highlighting the applied aspects of the discipline.
Practical laboratory training is a central component of the B.Sc. Microbiology program. Students gain hands-on experience in microscopy, microbial culture techniques, staining methods, sterilization, biochemical testing, and basic molecular techniques. Regular practical sessions, projects, and seminars enhance technical proficiency, observation skills, and scientific communication.
Graduates of the B.Sc. Microbiology program are eligible for entry-level positions in clinical and diagnostic laboratories, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, food and dairy industries, environmental monitoring agencies, and research laboratories. The program also serves as a strong foundation for higher studies such as Ph.D. (after four years program).
Programme Snapshot
Program Name: B.Sc. Microbiology
Duration: 4 Years (Semester System, NEP2020)
Eligibility: 10+2 (Science – PCB / PCM)
Mode: Full-time, Regular
Career Pathways: Molecular biology, microbiology, biotechnology fields, food industry, quality & safety, research, higher studies
Objective
The objective of the B.Sc. Microbiology program is to provide students with a strong foundation in the principles of microbiology and allied biological sciences. Program aims to develop essential laboratory skills, scientific reasoning, and an understanding of microbial roles in health, industry, agriculture, and the environment. It emphasizes practical training, biosafety, and introducing modern microbiological techniques. Program prepares graduates for entry-level employment in laboratories and industries, and provides a solid academic base for higher education, research, and interdisciplinary careers in life sciences.
Eligibility
10+2 with Science (PCB/PCM) from a recognized board with a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent grade (45% Marks or equivalent grade for Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribes), or as per university norms.
NEP-2020 also enables students to
