The Centre for Library and Information Management (CLIM), Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU) successfully organized a Six-Day Hands-on Workshop on “Koha & DSpace: Integrated Solutions for Modern Libraries and Digital Repositories” from 22nd to 27th June 2026 at the Computer Laboratory, School of Science and Technology (SST). The workshop was conducted with the objective of enhancing the technical skills of library professionals, faculty members, research scholars, students, and information managers in the implementation and management of Koha Integrated Library System (ILS) and DSpace Institutional Repository, two of the world’s most widely adopted open-source software solutions for library automation and digital repository management. The programme was conducted in bilingual mode (English and Hindi) to ensure effective participation and understanding among attendees from different educational and professional backgrounds.
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) Pramod Kumar, Dean, School of Science and Technology (SST); Prof. (Dr.) Preeti Kothiyal, Dean, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPS); Prof. Yogendra Singh, Coordinator, Centre for Library and Information Management (CLIM)-cum-University Librarian; and Dr. Ganesh Kumar, Principal, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPS). The dignitaries inaugurated the programme by lighting the ceremonial lamp and emphasized the growing importance of digital technologies, library automation, and institutional repositories in strengthening academic libraries and enhancing research visibility. They appreciated the initiative of CLIM in organizing a practical, skill-oriented programme and encouraged participants to develop expertise in open-source technologies that support efficient knowledge management and scholarly communication.
Welcoming the participants, Prof. Yogendra Singh, Coordinator, CLIM-cum-University Librarian, introduced the objectives and structure of the workshop. He emphasized that modern academic libraries require professionals who possess both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in implementing open-source technologies. He encouraged participants to actively engage in the practical sessions and apply the acquired skills to automate their libraries and establish institutional repositories in their respective organizations. Dr. Ganesh Kumar congratulated the organizing committee for conducting a timely and relevant workshop and highlighted the growing importance of digital information systems in healthcare education and research.
The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, librarians, assistant librarians, research scholars, students, system administrators, and information professionals representing universities, colleges, research institutions, and healthcare organizations across India. The programme also welcomed participants from Government Medical College, Chandigarh, Medanta Hospital, and several higher educational institutions, providing an excellent platform for interaction, collaboration, and exchange of professional experiences.
Day 1: 22 June 2026
The workshop commenced with participant registration and the inaugural session, followed by an introduction to library automation, digital repositories, and the significance of Koha and DSpace in modern library services. Participants were familiarized with the architecture, features, and applications of both software platforms. During the practical session, participants successfully installed Koha in a Linux environment and learned system configuration, OPAC overview, and basic administrative settings, providing them with a strong foundation for library automation.
Day 2: 23 June 2026
The second day focused on the operational modules of Koha. Participants received practical training in cataloguing using MARC21 standards, creation of bibliographic and authority records, and management of library resources. Sessions on the Circulation Module covered patron registration, issue, return, renewal, reservations, and fine management. The afternoon session introduced Acquisition and Serials Management, enabling participants to understand procurement workflows, budgeting, vendor management, and serial subscription management.
Day 3: 24 June 2026
The third day emphasized advanced features of Koha, including report generation, library statistics, and report scheduling. Participants learned to generate customized reports using SQL and explored techniques for OPAC customization, barcode generation, and label printing. The day concluded with an integrated practical exercise where participants completed an end-to-end workflow covering cataloguing, circulation, report generation, and OPAC customization, reinforcing the concepts learned during the previous sessions.
Day 4: 25 June 2026
The fourth day introduced participants to DSpace Institutional Repository. Sessions focused on repository concepts, metadata standards, and the importance of institutional repositories in preserving scholarly output. Participants learned DSpace installation, administrator configuration, user and group management, and repository architecture. Practical sessions enabled them to create communities and collections, configure workflows, and manage repository access and authorization settings.
Day 5: 26 June 2026
The fifth day concentrated on content submission and metadata management in DSpace. Participants learned the complete submission workflow for research publications and academic documents using Dublin Core metadata standards. Advanced topics included search and browse functionalities, repository statistics, OAI-PMH harvesting, backup and restoration procedures, digital preservation, and interoperability. The practical session provided participants with hands-on experience in repository administration, metadata editing, and troubleshooting common implementation issues.
Day 6: 27 June 2026
The final day featured an interactive Question–Answer Session, discussion, and problem-solving related to Koha and DSpace implementation. Participants shared their experiences, clarified technical queries, and discussed practical challenges encountered during the hands-on sessions. The programme concluded with a Valedictory and Feedback Session, during which participants appreciated the workshop’s practical approach, bilingual delivery, and comprehensive coverage of both software platforms. Certificates were distributed, and the organizing committee expressed gratitude to all resource persons, participants, and supporting staff for contributing to the successful completion of the workshop.
