The Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology of Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU), Dehradun, joined hands with institutions across the country to observe Nationwide Neonatal Resuscitation Programme (NRP) Day on Sunday. The event brought together nearly 40 healthcare professionals for an intensive mass training workshop in Basic NRP — a life-saving skill aimed at reviving newborns in the critical first moments after birth. The participation of doctors and nurses was recorded in equal ratio, reflecting a truly collaborative, team-based approach to newborn care.
The programme is a flagship initiative of the Uttarakhand Branch of the National Neonatology Forum (NNF), conducted in collaboration with Central NNF, the Government of India, the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP), UNICEF, the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI), and the Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI).
The event was graced by Prof. Ashok Deorari, Pro Vice-Chancellor of SRHU, as the Chief Guest, and Dr. Ruchira, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology as the Guest of Honour,. Nursing Faculty Ms. Kavita, NICU Incharge, also attended as a special guest, bringing with her the invaluable perspective of frontline nursing leadership in neonatal care. The programme was helmed by Prof. Alpa Gupta, State President of NNF Uttarakhand, and Dr. Rakesh Kumar, State Coordinator. The workshop was conducted under the expert guidance of Lead Instructor Dr. Sanober Wasim, Course Coordinators Dr. Neerul Pandita and Dr. Sonam Agrawal, and Dr. Nitika Agrawal.
Addressing the gathering, dignitaries underscored the urgent need to bring Uttarakhand’s neonatal mortality rate down from its current 17 deaths per 1,000 live births to a single-digit figure — a goal that hinges on equipping frontline healthcare workers with timely resuscitation skills.
The Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology at HIMS, SRHU has consistently been at the forefront of advancing newborn healthcare in the Himalayan region. Through sustained efforts in clinical excellence, community outreach, and capacity building, the department has emerged as a beacon of neonatal care in Uttarakhand. Organising an event of this scale — uniting national bodies, government agencies, and frontline healthcare workers under one roof — is a testament to the department’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that no newborn is lost for want of timely care.
The event served as a powerful reminder of the “Golden Minute” — the first 60 seconds after birth, during which prompt intervention can mean the difference between life and death for a newborn. The initiative reflects a growing resolve among Uttarakhand’s medical community to strengthen neonatal care at the grassroots level and give every newborn a fighting chance at life.
