The Department of Clinical Psychology, Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU), Dehradun, contributed as an expert knowledge partner in the state-level Training Workshop on Child-Centric Disaster Risk Reduction (CCDRR) organized by Dr. Raghunandan Singh Tolia Uttarakhand Academy of Administration (ATI), Nainital, under the sponsorship of the Disaster Management Department, Government of Uttarakhand on 22 June 2026.
Dr. Malini Srivastava, Associate Professor & Clinical Psychologist, Department of Clinical Psychology, HIMS, delivered expert sessions focusing on the importance of integrating child-sensitive approaches into disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and rehabilitation. The workshop was attended by 35 administrative authorities from various government departments including Health, Disaster Management, Education, Police, Women & Child Development, Rural Development, Revenue and allied sectors.
The sessions highlighted the vulnerabilities and capacities of children during disasters, emphasizing that children should not only be viewed as victims but also as active contributors to community resilience. Discussions covered child participation in disaster preparedness, school safety programmes, community-based disaster planning, psychological responses to trauma, and the role of stakeholders in building resilient communities.
A key focus of the programme was psychosocial support for children during disasters, with Dr. Srivastava sharing evidence-based learnings from the 2013 Kedarnath Disaster. She highlighted the significant contribution of HIMS–SRHU in providing mental health support during the disaster aftermath through collaboration with government agencies and health authorities. The initiative included training approximately 360 government health workers in Psychological First Aid (PFA) and providing structured psychological support, crisis intervention, grief counselling, and trauma-informed care to more than 1,500 disaster survivors across affected districts.
The programme strengthened the understanding of disaster mental health, Psychological First Aid, and child-focused disaster management among administrative officials. It also showcased the expertise of HIMS–SRHU in disaster response, clinical psychology, and community-based mental health interventions.
The workshop further enhanced collaboration between academic institutions and government systems, promoting evidence-based strategies for safeguarding children’s psychological well-being and building more resilient communities across Uttarakhand.
