SRHU celebrated World Blood Donor Day 2026 on 14 June 2026 at the Department of Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion (Blood Centre), HIMS. The event was organized by the Department of Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion in collaboration with the Literary and Fine Arts Committee, with the objective of promoting voluntary blood donation and recognising the invaluable contribution of blood donors.
The celebration began with the inauguration of the blood donation camp by the Chief Guest, Dr A. Shariff, Dean, HIMS, SRHU. The programme witnessed voluntary participation from donors, reflecting the spirit of service and social responsibility. The event also included lamp lighting and a welcome address by Dr Dushyant Singh Gaur, Professor and Head, Department of Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion.
A special highlight of the programme was the felicitation of Mr Aman Rana, a rare Bombay Blood Group donor. He was honoured for his contribution and also inaugurated the ‘Rare Blood Donor Cards’. The Bombay Blood Group is an exceptionally rare blood type, found in approximately one in ten lakh individuals globally. Mr Rana is recognised as the first reported Bombay Blood Group donor from Uttarakhand at the institute, identified in 2022.
The programme also acknowledged the efforts of internal and external camp organisers who have consistently supported blood donation initiatives and helped strengthen the availability of blood resources. Representatives from SRHU institutions, including the School of Science and Technology and Himalayan College of Nursing, along with organisations such as Adarshila Raktdaan Samooh, Blood Volunteers Haridwar, Ek Madad Blood Group Samiti, and Rakt Mitra Uttarakhand Parivaar, were felicitated for their contributions.
Regular female donor Dr Kiran Bhat and apheresis donor Mr Sandeep Joshi were also recognised for their commitment. The event included prize distribution for poster and slogan competitions, encouraging creative expression around blood donation awareness. The celebration concluded with an address by the Chief Guest and a pledge ceremony where participants committed themselves to voluntary non-remunerated blood donation, reinforcing the message of compassion, responsibility, and community service.
