BCA Students Explore Real-World Wastewater Treatment Systems at SRHU

Published on: May 7, 2025

On 7th May 2025, a field visit was organized for BCA – II Semester (Section A) students from the School of Science & Technology (SST), Swami Rama Himalayan University, as part of their Environmental Studies curriculum. The visit to the university’s on-campus Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) aimed to provide practical exposure to sustainable environmental practices, particularly in wastewater management.

The STP at SRHU treats sewage generated from the hospital, hostels, academic buildings, and residential quarters. During the visit, students observed key stages of the treatment process, including the primary sedimentation tank, aeration chambers, secondary sedimentation tank, and advanced filtration systems using sand and activated charcoal. The experience offered insights into how wastewater is processed and treated to meet environmental safety standards.

Throughout the visit, students documented physical differences between untreated and treated water and interacted with plant personnel to clarify doubts. They took photographs and notes to assist in preparing field reports and assignments. This hands-on experience allowed them to connect theoretical learning with real-world applications in an engaging manner.

With 57 students participating, the visit proved to be an enriching academic activity. It not only helped reinforce classroom concepts but also promoted awareness about environmental sustainability and the importance of responsible water management. The exposure enhanced their analytical skills and encouraged a deeper understanding of infrastructure systems that support sustainable living.
