Confronting a Silent Crisis: Lecture on Substance Abuse by Dr. Deepshika Chaudhary

Published on: August 10, 2024

The Department of Clinical Research at Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, Swami Rama Himalayan University, conducted an insightful lecture on Substance Abuse on August 10, 2024. Led by Dr. Deepshika Chaudhary and attended by 16 students, the session aimed to deepen understanding of the far-reaching impact of substance abuse and explore preventive and remedial strategies.

Dr. Chaudhary began by identifying commonly abused substances such as alcohol, cannabis, opioids, and other psychoactive drugs. She emphasized how these substances not only harm physical and mental health but also affect personal relationships, hinder professional performance, and contribute to broader societal issues such as crime and increased healthcare burdens.

The lecture highlighted the multifaceted consequences of substance abuse, including addiction, emotional distress, family breakdowns, and community degradation. Dr. Chaudhary also emphasized the importance of education, community engagement, and access to rehabilitation in preventing and managing substance dependence.

A key focus of the session was the government’s role in combating substance abuse. Dr. Chaudhary elaborated on national initiatives like the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR), which incorporates awareness campaigns, de-addiction support, and law enforcement to create a coordinated response to the crisis.

Participants left the session with a clearer understanding of the gravity of substance abuse, its long-term implications, and the resources available for prevention and recovery. The lecture served not only as an educational tool but also as a call to action—encouraging students to advocate for awareness, responsibility, and support within their communities.

The session ultimately underscored the pressing need to address substance abuse with empathy, knowledge, and a proactive approach to build a healthier society.
