Dr Rajendra Dobhal takes the reins as VC Swami Rama Himalayan University

Dr Rajendra Dobhal assumed charge as Vice Chancellor Swami Rama Himalayan University on 15th June 2023.

A brief ceremony was held at the university wherein the Chancellor, Dr Vijay Dhasmana formally inducted the new member into the SRHU family.

Prior to this new appointment, Dr Dobhal was Director Strategic Planning, Research and Development at SRHU.

Formerly Director General, Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST), Govt. of Uttarakhand, Dr Rajendra Dobhal comes with decades of exceptional experience in diverse fields. Expectations from him are high.

Praising Dr Dobhal’s past accomplishments, Dr Dhasmana stated, “I am delighted to have him lead our university. I am certain he will prove to be a valuable asset to SRHU in times when there is great resurgence in the higher education landscape. We expect him to do amazing work here by aligning with our vision and motivating and inspiring our team. As an academic leader he has to shoulder immense burden and responsibility to steer SRHU on the path of excellence, harness collective talents of faculty and students, and make it an integral part of the international academic community by promoting intensity of thinking and inculcating strong research culture.”

During his illustrious career with UCOST spanning several years, Dr Dobhal was credited with having shaped the S&T structure in Uttarakhand. He was instrumental in the preparation of the S&T VISION document under the chairmanship of Prof. M.G.K. Menon.

He helped establish the VIGYAN DHAM, SCIENCE CITY in Doon along with the Sub Regional Science Centre, Almora. This apart he helped establish many centres of importance in Uttarakhand such as the Centre for Advance Study in Mathematics, Centre for Climate Change Studies, Patent Information Center, Center of Excellence on Forest based Livelihood System, Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI), Water Testing Lab, Tissue Culture Lab, and seven technology resource centres.

Dr Dobhal has also been associated with various important committees
of Central and State governments. He steered the constitution of task force on mountain agriculture and allied sectors in Uttarakhand (Rural Development and Migration Commission, Uttarakhand). He was Member -CSIR-NISCAIR Research Council; Secretary – National Academy of Sciences India, Uttarakhand Chapter; Councilor – Integrated Mountain Initiative, New Delhi; Member TIFAC (Technology Needs Assessment) Project for Forestry Sector; and Member Task Force for Implementation of National IPR Policy.

He has contributed to the Study of Himalayan Glaciers and has been

an integral part of good governance committee of different Universities.

Dr Dobhal has also occupied positions of eminence with organizations such as National Research Development Corporation, Uttarakhand Science Education and Research Centre, Uttarakhand Space Application Centre, and Uttarakhand State Biotechnology Board.

A Fellow of The National Academy of Sciences, Dr Dobhal is a known Intellectual Property (IP) professional trained from Department of Science & Technology, government of India; Washington University, USA; International Law Development Institute (ILDI), Manila, Philippines and National Law University, Bangalore. He is recipient of several awards such as Royal Australian Chemical Institute Award; International Commonwealth Youth Sliver Award and Pride of Uttarakhand.

Dr Dobhal has monitored over 250 R&D projects leading to national/international publications and patents. He is proud to have successfully organized 11 Science Congresses in Uttarakhand, leading to benefit over 10,000 scientists. He has written over 40 technical reports, 12 books, published over 150 research papers in various journals of national & international repute.

A widely travelled scientist he was instrumental in signing numerous MoUs with organizations like Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology, GoI; European Business and Technology Center while serving Government of India and Riverbank Filtration (RBF) Technology transfers from the University of Applied Sciences, Dresden, Germany.

International Endowed Chair Professor

Prof Rakesh Kumar

Prof Rakesh Kumar is the Founder and President of the Breast Cancer in Young Women Foundation (USA), dedicated to vaddressing the distinct issues affecting young women with breast cancer. He also serves as the International Endowed Chair Professor at the Cancer Research Institute of the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences. Additionally, he holds adjunct professorships at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr Kumar earned his Ph.D. from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1984 and began his research career at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in January 1986. From 1988 to 2017, he held various academic and leadership positions —including faculty member, tenured professor, distinguished professor, endowed chair, department chair, and research leader—at esteemed institutions such as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. From 2017 to 2022, he served as the National Chair for Cancer Research for the Government of India and as a distinguished professor, continuing his innovative work in breast cancer research.

With nearly 40 years of research and professional experience, Dr. Kumar has made conceptual contributions to the field of cancer research (h-index 108, citations >50,000). He has authored over 325 peer-reviewed publications, edited or co-edited nine books, and delivered 290 invited lectures worldwide. His work has been featured on the covers of 18 major cancer journals and has been highlighted in institutional research reports of the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

A passionate educator and mentor, Dr. Kumar has guided 67 trainees throughout his career. He serves on the editorial boards of multiple leading cancer journals and has served on the editorial boards of 21 top cancer journals. His global reputation is further demonstrated by his participation in about 100 peer-review panels for cancer research funding in the US and internationally over the past 28 years.

Dr. Kumar's innovative research has earned him numerous prestigious honors, including the Hinkle Society Faculty Award at Penn State University (1994), the Dalla/Fort Worth Living Legend Faculty Achievement Award in Basic Sciences (2004), the Ranbaxy Research Award (2006), and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Indian Scientists in Cancer Research (2013), among others. Dr. Kumar's pioneering research continues to have a profound influence on the fields of oncology and breast cancer, opening up new opportunities for biomedical scientists and trainees worldwide.
