A Drug Awareness Program was organized by the Nasha Mukt Hostel Committee at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Swami Rama Himalayan University, with the objective of educating students about drugs, their types, and the consequences of substance abuse. The session began with opening remarks by Dr. Nikku Yadav, who highlighted the aims and significance of establishing the Nasha Mukt Hostel Committee at SRHU. This was followed by an address from Dr. Priya Ranjan Avinash (Chairperson), who spoke about the “Nasha Mukt Abhiyan” initiated under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji.
Dr. Nitika Kimothi elaborated on the concept of drugs as chemical substances that influence the physiological and psychological functions of the human body. She emphasized that while many drugs are essential for medical purposes—such as prevention, diagnosis, and treatment—their misuse can lead to serious health, social, and ethical consequences. She further highlighted that substance abuse is an emerging public health concern in India as well as globally, affecting individuals, families, and society at large. The session focused on creating awareness about commonly abused substances, their harmful effects, and the risks associated with their use, particularly among youth.
Dr. Priya Ranjan Avinash explained how drugs can alter brain functioning, sometimes within just a few hours of consumption. He emphasized that young people are particularly vulnerable to addiction due to curiosity, peer pressure, and lack of awareness. He stressed that understanding the side effects of drugs is a crucial step toward prevention. He also guided students on how to refuse alcohol consumption if someone pressures them to drink. He also shared practical strategies to avoid substance abuse, including making informed choices, resisting peer pressure, and maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
The session was interactive, with students actively engaging and asking questions about alcohol use, drug dependence, and ways to quit harmful habits. Dr. Avinash reassured students that addiction is a medical condition and can be treated with proper support and willingness. He encouraged those affected to seek help and mentioned that students could visit his OPD for guidance and treatment if needed.
Dr. Nitika Kimothi also conducted an engaging quiz session on myths and facts related to alcohol consumption. This activity helped clear misconceptions and strengthened students’ understanding in an interactive manner.
The Drug Awareness Program was both informative and engaging, successfully meeting its objective of spreading awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse. The session concluded with remarks by Dr. Nikku Yadav, Member Secretary, who encouraged students to stay vigilant on campus and report any suspicious activities via email.
