The Rural Development Institute-HIHT, Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU) organized a Distribution Ceremony for Scholarships, Certificates of the ASHA Certificate Course, and Assistive Devices at the B.C. Roy Conference Hall, Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), on 19 August 2026. The ceremony brought together three important interventions focused on expanding educational opportunities, strengthening the capacities of frontline health workers, and promoting inclusion and independence among Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
During the ceremony, scholarships were awarded to 67 meritorious students from economically disadvantaged and marginalized backgrounds, helping them continue their education and ensuring that financial hardship does not become a barrier to their academic aspirations. Certificates were presented to 11 participants who successfully completed the ASHA Certificate Course, strengthening the knowledge and skills of frontline health workers to support community health services. Seven wheelchairs were also distributed to Persons with Disabilities to enhance mobility, independence, and participation in family and community life.
Speaking as the Chief Guest, Dr. A. Shariff, Dean, Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, SRHU, congratulated all the scholarship recipients and ASHA Certificate Course participants. He emphasized the importance of making the best use of the opportunities and support provided to them and encouraged the students to work hard and remain committed to their academic journey. He appreciated university’s efforts in supporting education, strengthening frontline healthcare through the ASHA Certificate Course, and promoting inclusion through its disability-related initiatives. He noted that such programmes reflect the University’s distinctive approach to social development and community engagement.
Dr. Taruna Gautam, Director, School of Management Studies, SRHU, highlighted the importance of scholarships in enabling students from marginalized communities to continue their education with confidence and dignity. She observed that while sustainable development is widely discussed in academic settings, initiatives such as these demonstrate its practical application on the ground. She encouraged students and faculty of the School of Management to learn from RDI’s community-based programmes and explore opportunities to contribute towards making such initiatives more effective and impactful.
Dr. Rajeev Bijalwan, Deputy Director, RDI, and Mrs. Neelam Pandey, Manager, RDI, highlighted the objectives and significance of the programmes, emphasizing the importance of sustained community-based interventions in creating opportunities and improving the quality of life of underserved populations.
The ceremony also included an experience-sharing session by students and teachers, coordinated by Mr. Sunil Khanduri, Senior Coordinator, offering insights into the impact of scholarships and the role of educational support in shaping the aspirations and future of students.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Ravindra Verma, Deputy Manager, RDI.
