The Department of Pathology at Swami Rama Himalayan University hosted a focused guest lecture on January 8, 2025, titled “Round Cell Tumors of Bone.” The lecture was delivered by Dr. Aparna Bhardwaj, Professor of Pathology at SGRR Medical College, Dehradun, and brought attention to the evolving landscape of bone pathology.
The session explored emerging insights into the diagnosis and classification of round cell tumors of bone, a complex group that includes entities often difficult to differentiate through morphology alone. Dr. Bhardwaj emphasized the importance of integrated diagnostic approaches, combining histopathology with advanced immunohistochemistry and molecular techniques.
The highlight of the lecture was the discussion on newly recognized genetic fusion markers, such as CIC-DUX4 and BCOR-CCNB3, which have refined diagnostic accuracy and are redefining subgroups within Ewing-like sarcomas. Dr. Bhardwaj elaborated on how these molecular discoveries have not only enhanced diagnostic specificity but also opened avenues for targeted therapies.
With approximately 15 participants in attendance, the session was intimate and highly interactive, enabling in-depth discussions and case-based learning. Attendees gained valuable exposure to the role of molecular genetics in bone tumor pathology, a domain that continues to evolve with ongoing research.
This guest lecture added significant value to the department’s academic enrichment initiatives, offering participants a deeper understanding of rare bone tumors and encouraging further exploration in the fields of oncopathology and molecular diagnostics.
