Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU), under the aegis of the Women Health & Empowerment Club, organized an interactive guest lecture on “Women’s Health: Strategies for Cervical Cancer Prevention and Control” at the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), SRHU. The session aimed to promote awareness regarding cervical cancer prevention, HPV vaccination, screening strategies, and the role of healthcare professionals in strengthening women’s healthcare services.
The university had the honour of hosting Prof. Neerja Bhatla, Padma Shri, an internationally renowned Gynecologic Oncologist and distinguished expert in women’s healthcare, as the keynote speaker. She was warmly welcomed by Dr. Vijendra Chauhan, Director General (Academic Development), SRHU, along with Dr. Shariiff, Dean, HIMS, SRHU. The session was attended by faculty members, healthcare professionals, nursing faculty, postgraduate residents, MSc Clinical Research students, and BSc Nursing students.
During her address, Prof. Bhatla delivered an insightful lecture on cervical cancer awareness, preventive strategies, HPV vaccination, and screening protocols. She elaborated on the currently available HPV vaccines, including Gardasil 4, Gardasil 9, and India’s indigenous vaccine Cervavac, highlighting their significance in improving vaccine accessibility and public health outreach. She also discussed updated vaccination guidelines, explaining that a single-dose HPV vaccine is considered adequate for individuals below 20 years of age, while those aged 21 years and above are advised a two-dose schedule. She further emphasized that sexually active women are also eligible for vaccination, preferably after appropriate screening.
The scientific session was moderated by Dr. Ruchira Nautiyal, Professor and Head, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, HIMS, SRHU. One of the major highlights of the event was the interactive question-and-answer session, where participants discussed challenges in implementing large-scale screening programs, misconceptions regarding HPV vaccination, vaccine safety, and strategies to strengthen awareness about women’s health.
The session concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Nikku Yadav. The event reflected SRHU’s continued commitment toward preventive healthcare awareness, research-driven education, and academic excellence in women’s health and oncology.
