The Rehabilitation Unit of Speech & Hearing at the Department of ENT, SRHU, observed Noise Awareness Day on 30th April 2025 with a range of meaningful and informative activities. Aimed at raising awareness about noise-induced hearing loss, the events targeted not only BASLP students but also OPD visitors, hospital patients, and their attendants.
The program commenced with a poster-making competition in which students from BASLP Batches 2023 and 2024 created impactful visuals on the theme of “Noise Awareness Day.” The objective was to creatively communicate the dangers of excessive noise exposure and promote preventive measures.
This was followed by an insightful lecture by Ms. Archana Dass, Assistant Professor of Audiology, on the “Harmful Effects of Noise.” She emphasized the irreversible damage that can occur from continuous exposure to noise above 72 decibels and the importance of using ear protection and limiting time in noisy environments.
A quiz competition organized by Mr. Sahil Sharma, Lecturer in ASLP, further engaged the BASLP students. With a total of 60 students participating, the quiz tested and reinforced their knowledge of the causes, symptoms, and prevention of noise-induced hearing loss. The interactive session enhanced awareness and provided a platform for intellectual engagement on the topic.
In a field-based initiative, BASLP students conducted a hearing health survey across the university campus under faculty guidance. They screened 84 individuals—47 male and 37 female—to assess their exposure to hazardous noise levels. The results were eye-opening: 87% of male and 78% of female respondents were found to be regularly exposed to noise in their daily routines, highlighting the need for stronger awareness and preventive action.
The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, graced by Dr. S.S. Bist, Professor and Head of the ENT Department. In his encouraging address, he congratulated the student participants for their enthusiastic involvement and commitment to public health awareness. He also distributed prizes to winners of the quiz and poster competitions.
This well-orchestrated observance of Noise Awareness Day at SRHU not only educated students and stakeholders about the risks of noise pollution but also inspired collective responsibility toward safeguarding hearing health.
