The Department of Community Medicine and Department of Biostatistics, Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU), celebrated National Statistics Day 2026 by organizing an online expert lecture on the topic “From Data to Intelligence: The Role of Statistics in AI and Big Data: How Statistics is the Backbone for Ethical AI.” The programme witnessed the enthusiastic participation of more than 100 faculty members, researchers, healthcare professionals, and students from within and outside the University, reflecting the growing interest in statistics, artificial intelligence, and data-driven healthcare.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Jayanti Semwal, Professor and Head, Department of Community Medicine, who welcomed the dignitaries and participants and emphasized the indispensable role of statistics in advancing public health research and evidence-based healthcare.
The gathering was then addressed by Dr. A. Sharrif, Dean, Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, who highlighted the importance of statistical thinking in medical education and healthcare policy. He encouraged students and researchers to embrace emerging technologies while maintaining scientific rigor and ethical standards.
The keynote expert talk was delivered by Dr. M. Vishnu Vardhana Rao, Officiating Vice Chancellor, PHFI Institute of Public Health Sciences (Deemed to be University), ICMR Chair for Medical Statistics, and former Director of the ICMR–National Institute of Medical Statistics (NIMS), New Delhi.
In his insightful presentation, Dr. Rao explained how statistics serves as the backbone of artificial intelligence and big data analytics. He emphasized that robust statistical methods are fundamental to ensuring data quality, developing reliable predictive models, and promoting transparency, fairness, and accountability in AI-driven decision-making. He also highlighted the importance of ethical frameworks and responsible use of administrative and health data in strengthening research, healthcare delivery, and public policy.
The programme was further enriched by the gracious virtual presence of Dr. Padam Singh, Former Additional Director General (Addl. DG), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and former Director of the ICMR–National Institute of Medical Statistics (NIMS), New Delhi. His presence added immense value to the celebration and served as a source of inspiration for the faculty members, researchers, and students attending the programme.
The lecture was followed by an engaging interactive question-and-answer session, during which participants actively discussed topics related to ethical AI, data quality, machine learning applications in healthcare, and the evolving role of statisticians in the era of big data.
The event was coordinated by Ms. Akanksha Sharma and Mr. Abhinav Bahuguna, Assistant Professors, Department of Biostatistics, HIMS, SRHU, whose dedicated planning and seamless coordination ensured the successful conduct of the online programme.
The celebration reaffirmed Swami Rama Himalayan University’s commitment to promoting statistical literacy, interdisciplinary research, and the ethical application of data science and artificial intelligence in healthcare and public health. The programme also served as a fitting tribute to the legacy of Professor P. C. Mahalanobis by emphasizing the vital role of statistics in addressing contemporary scientific and societal challenges.
