A lecture on “Current Trends in Microbiology” by Dr. Rup Lal, INSA Senior Scientist from Acharya Narendra Dev College, University of Delhi, was held on November 15, 2025, at Lecture Theatre 7 in the School of Biosciences. Organized to enhance students’ understanding of advances in microbial sciences, the session began with an introduction by Dr. Bindu Dey, Director Research, SRHU. Dr. Lal emphasized the significance of microbes in the ecosystem, particularly the human microbiome, explaining how gut microbial communities are shaped by diet, lifestyle, environment, and genetics. He discussed the strong connection between the gut microbiome and human health, highlighting the role of dysbiosis in conditions such as diabetes, obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, allergies, and mental health disorders. The gut–brain axis was explained as a key communication pathway through which gut microbes influence mood and cognitive functions. Dr. Lal also introduced emerging therapeutic approaches including probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation, along with practical ways to maintain a healthy microbiome. The session concluded with an interactive question–answer segment, motivating students to explore research opportunities in the field of microbiome science.
