The School of Biosciences, Swami Rama Himalayan University, Dehradun, organized an educational tour to the Food Corporation of India (FCI), Gularghati, Dehradun, to help students gain practical exposure to food storage systems and quality assurance protocols. Upon arrival, the students were welcomed by the technical staff, who gave an insightful briefing on the functioning and national importance of FCI in ensuring food security.
Students observed the scientific storage of grains inside massive godown using jute/burlap bags and modern stack management practices. Officers explained how moisture, temperature, and pest control are monitored regularly to maintain grain quality. The visit also included a demonstration of the quality-testing laboratory, where students learned about essential analyses such as moisture content, foreign matter detection, grain size evaluation, and infestation checks. Through this visit, students were able to correlate classroom learning with actual field operations, gaining exposure to warehousing, food safety protocols, supply chain management, and national-level procurement systems. The tour helped them understand the importance of quality control in ensuring safe and nutritious food reaches consumers across the country.
