Swami Rama Himalayan University Hosts ‘Women Empowerment through Science and Technology’ Workshop; Inaugurates Uttarakhand Chapter of National Academy of Sciences

Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU) witnessed a milestone event with the inauguration of the Uttarakhand Chapter of the National Academy of Sciences during the two-day workshop on ‘Women Empowerment through Science and Technology in Uttarakhand’ held on March 29th and 30th, 2024.

The inaugural session commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, symbolizing enlightenment and progress, in the presence of esteemed guests and participants. Padma Bhushan, Dr. Manju Sharma, Former Chairperson of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), Former Secretary DBT, Govt. of India, emphasized the pivotal role of women in societal development and the transformative power of science and technology in fostering gender equality.

Dr. Vijay Dhasmana, President of Swami Rama Himalayan University, underscored the significance of respecting and empowering women for societal advancement. He highlighted the potential of science and technology in enhancing women’s self-reliance, especially in rural areas, thereby contributing to economic growth and sustainability.

Dr. Rajendra Dobhal, Vice-Chancellor of SRHU and newly appointed President of NASI Uttarakhand Chapter, welcomed the participants, affirming the commitment to women’s empowerment through scientific advancements. The special guest, Director General of Academic Development, Dr. Vijendra Chauhan, noted that women have always held a special status in families, a status that has evolved over time.Special guest Dr. Paramjit Khurana outlined the program’s framework. Dr. Bindu De, director of the Research Cell, thanked all the attendees. The event was attended by the university registrar Dr. Mukesh Bijalwan, principals, and faculty of all the university’s colleges.

Special guests, including Dr. Vijendra Chauhan and Dr. Paramjit Khurana JC Bose National Fellow, University of Delhi, further elaborated on the evolving status of women and the role of academia in driving positive change.

Over the course of the workshop, eminent speakers delved into critical topics such as women’s health, integration of management tools in women’s development, and medical disorders. Dr. Bindu Dey, Director of Research at SRHU, led the discussion on the latest research developments within the campus, showcasing the institution’s dedication to academic excellence and innovation.

The concluding ceremony featured insightful remarks from Dr. Manju Sharma, who expressed confidence in SRHU’s leadership in advancing science and technology in Uttarakhand. Dr. Santosh Kumar, Executive Secretary of NASI, and Dr. Paramjit Khurana, graced the event, underscoring the collaborative efforts toward scientific progress.

In addition to enriching discussions, the workshop also featured a quiz competition, engaging students from various schools of the university. The winners were felicitated during the concluding ceremony, celebrating their knowledge and enthusiasm for women’s empowerment and scientific exploration.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Bindu Dey, acknowledging the contributions of all participants, speakers, and organizers in making the workshop a resounding success. As SRHU continues its journey towards academic excellence and societal impact, initiatives like the NASI Uttarakhand Chapter inauguration serve as significant milestones in promoting scientific advancement and gender inclusivity.

International Endowed Chair Professor

Prof Rakesh Kumar

Prof Rakesh Kumar is the Founder and President of the Breast Cancer in Young Women Foundation (USA), dedicated to vaddressing the distinct issues affecting young women with breast cancer. He also serves as the International Endowed Chair Professor at the Cancer Research Institute of the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences. Additionally, he holds adjunct professorships at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr Kumar earned his Ph.D. from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1984 and began his research career at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in January 1986. From 1988 to 2017, he held various academic and leadership positions —including faculty member, tenured professor, distinguished professor, endowed chair, department chair, and research leader—at esteemed institutions such as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. From 2017 to 2022, he served as the National Chair for Cancer Research for the Government of India and as a distinguished professor, continuing his innovative work in breast cancer research.

With nearly 40 years of research and professional experience, Dr. Kumar has made conceptual contributions to the field of cancer research (h-index 108, citations >50,000). He has authored over 325 peer-reviewed publications, edited or co-edited nine books, and delivered 290 invited lectures worldwide. His work has been featured on the covers of 18 major cancer journals and has been highlighted in institutional research reports of the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

A passionate educator and mentor, Dr. Kumar has guided 67 trainees throughout his career. He serves on the editorial boards of multiple leading cancer journals and has served on the editorial boards of 21 top cancer journals. His global reputation is further demonstrated by his participation in about 100 peer-review panels for cancer research funding in the US and internationally over the past 28 years.

Dr. Kumar's innovative research has earned him numerous prestigious honors, including the Hinkle Society Faculty Award at Penn State University (1994), the Dalla/Fort Worth Living Legend Faculty Achievement Award in Basic Sciences (2004), the Ranbaxy Research Award (2006), and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Indian Scientists in Cancer Research (2013), among others. Dr. Kumar's pioneering research continues to have a profound influence on the fields of oncology and breast cancer, opening up new opportunities for biomedical scientists and trainees worldwide.
