Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU) observed World No Tobacco Day with a series of awareness activities aimed at educating the public about the harmful effects of tobacco use and promoting a tobacco-free lifestyle. The programme was organized by the Department of Radiation Oncology, in collaboration with the Department of Community Medicine, at the Cancer Care and Research Centre (CCRC), Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS).
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, healthcare professionals, patients, attendants, and students of the Bachelor of Radiation Technology (BRT) programme.
Addressing the gathering, faculty members highlighted the serious health consequences associated with tobacco consumption and emphasized the importance of prevention and cessation efforts. Dr. A. Sharieff spoke on the need for collective action and sustained public awareness to combat tobacco addiction in society.
Dr. Mohanty, Dr. Sunil Saini, Dr. Vipul Nautiyal, and Dr. Abhishek interacted with patients and attendants, educating them about the ill effects of tobacco use and encouraging them to adopt healthier lifestyle practices. Dr. Verma, Dr. Ankit Batra, Dr. Vinay, and Dr. Mansi were also present on the occasion and actively participated in the programme.
Dr. Priyaranjan Avinash, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, and Dr. Shaili Vyas from the Department of Community Medicine underscored the significance of awareness programmes in preventing tobacco-related diseases and highlighted the vital role of healthcare professionals and students in community education and advocacy.
As part of the observance, several academic and awareness activities, including a debate competition, extempore competition, and poster presentation, were organized for students. Participants confidently shared their views on tobacco-related issues and emphasized the importance of prevention, early intervention, and public awareness.
A major highlight of the programme was a powerful Nukkad Natak (street play) performed by BRT students, depicting the adverse impact of tobacco addiction on individuals, families, and society. The performance effectively conveyed a strong message encouraging people to quit tobacco and embrace a healthier lifestyle. The activity was mentored and coordinated by Dr. Anmol Mahani.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks to all organizers, faculty members, students, and supporting staff for making the event informative and successful. The observance of World No Tobacco Day served as a meaningful initiative towards strengthening public health awareness and fostering a healthier, tobacco-free society.
