Overview
The Department of Medical Physics provides scientific expertise and support in the areas of radiation therapy, medical imaging (including diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine) and radiation protection across all radiation-utilizing sectors of the hospital. The Department aims to ensure the accurate and safe application of ionizing radiation for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in compliance with the national regulatory body. To achieve the goal of delivering high-quality patient care with minimal risk from ionizing radiation to patients, healthcare personnel and the public, the department is actively involved in periodic quality assurance of diagnostic and therapeutic radiation systems. It also undertakes precise radiation dosimetry and comprehensive treatment planning for cancer patients.
The Department is dedicated to the teaching and training of medical physics, medical, and paramedical programs. It offers comprehensive curricula covering radiation physics, imaging techniques, radiation safety, treatment planning, and quality assurance. Equipped with state- of-the-art laboratories and clinical equipment, the department provides hands-on learning and structured practical training in workplace radiation safety for healthcare professionals.
Additionally, the department actively engages in research and development, with faculty conducting intramural and extramural collaborative projects focused on innovative techniques to improve patient care and radiological safety.

Facilities
The department has a fully equipped laboratory with advanced scientific instruments, including gamma ray spectrometer, GM counting system, thermoluminescent dosimetry (TLD), film and gel dosimetry systems, UV visible spectrophotometer, various radiation meters and tissue equivalent phantoms. In addition, the department has a range of electronics and other physics instruments.
The department also provides clinical services in radiation therapy, diagnostic radiology, and nuclear medicine. Radiation therapy facilities feature state-of-the-art linear accelerators, including the Varian TrueBeam and Varian Halcyon, as well as a Gamma Med Plus iX remote afterloading high-dose-rate brachytherapy system, supported by an Eclipse treatment planning system. The institution is equipped with 35 diagnostic and interventional radiology devices of various types, including MRI and ultrasound systems. Nuclear medicine facilities include a gamma camera, SPECT, and PET-CT scanners. Dosimetry facilities comprise of a radiation field analyser (RFA), treatment plan verification systems, various types of ionization chambers, and comprehensive quality assurance kits.
Research
The faculty members are actively involved in research works in various areas, including medical radiation physics, computational research, medical & environmental dosimetry and have published research articles in various reputed journals from Elsevier, Springer and Nature Publishing groups, as well as in conference proceedings. They also contribute to intellectual property rights (IPR) and have published patents with the Indian Patent office. Additionally, faculty members serve on the editorial board of scientific journals and as members of various scientific societies. Faculty members actively participate in national and international conferences/symposia to deliver invited talks and presenting research papers. Some faculty members of the department have visited various countries, including Germany, Japan, Taiwan, the United States of America, and Austria, to deliver talks at international conferences and participate in other scientific activities, such as research collaboration meetings. Furthermore, they have executed extramural research projects sponsored by national and state funding agencies such as AERB, BRNS, SERB, and UCOST. The department collaborates on research with other departments of the institution, as well as other national and international institutions. In recognition of their research contributions, faculty members have received numerous awards from reputed organizations and scientific societies.
