Overview

Ph.D. in Biosciences at SRHU offers scholars an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge and socially relevant research that bridges fundamental science with real-world impact. Current research thrusts include the discovery of predictive and prognostic molecular markers for treatment response and prognosis in medicine and cancer; developing population-specific normative reference ranges for Indian communities; and integrating genome-centric precision medicine with holistic approaches such as Ayurvedic personalized medicine. In the domain of Biosciences, ongoing projects focus on assessing and documenting the genetic diversity of nutraceuticals, medicinal plants, and endangered species of Uttarakhand using molecular markers; advancing sustainable bioprocesses for bioremediation of water and wastewater through microbial consortia and innovative bioreactor design; and developing biofertilizers and biopesticides tailored to the needs of the region. Beyond these, research also extends to exploring the therapeutic potential of natural products, application of modern omics technologies, and translational research in biotechnology to address healthcare, agriculture, and environmental challenges. The program nurtures scholars in an interdisciplinary environment, encouraging innovation, collaboration, and enterprise-driven solutions for societal benefit. At present, the school offers Ph.D. programs in Biotechnology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry, providing a strong foundation for advanced inquiry and impactful research.

Programme Objective

The objective of the Master’s Program in Microbiology is to equip the students to gain bimolecular knowledge and analytical skills at an advanced level. The program emphasizes to apply knowledge acquired about prokaryotic and eukaryotic cellular processes, interaction of microorganisms among themselves, with physical and chemical agents and higher order organisms in environment and biological systems to various conditions. Students will be able to address broad range of fields including biopolymer chemistry, marine biochemistry, environmental biotechnology, food science, microbiology, microbial genetics, molecular biology and systems biology

The M.Sc. Microbiology course at the School of Biosciences, SRHU, has been designed on the basis of learning outcome based curriculum framework (LOCF) motto. The course covers the fundamental and advanced areas of Microbiology with a range of core subjects in each semester. Along with providing the traditional knowledge, the course also has enough scope for inter- and multi-disciplinary subjects in the form of electives. This course also caters the skill enhancement needs of the students as well as provides opportunity for collaboration and learning from other disciplines in the form of general elective courses, and thus enabling the students to broaden their horizon in complementary subjects. Every semester has a practical course for strengthening their skills in designing and conducting experiments in the field of Microbiology. The six-month dissertation in the last semester

The student shall be eligible for admission to a Master’s Degree Program in Pharmaceutical

Chemistry after he/she has successfully completed a three year B.Sc or B.Pharm. undergraduate degree with chemistry as one of the subject or earned with not less than 50% marks or equivalent grade prescribed number of credits or through the examinations conducted by University as equivalent to an undergraduate degree.

Pharmaceutical chemistry is a career oriented, high demand fundamental course with applications in all biological research, be it plants, animal, human and microbes. Students can peruse basic research work in research institutes or universities by qualifying various exams for research fellowships. Students can also work in pharmaceutical and applied biotechnological fields. It provides opportunity to students to develop their career in the following areas:

Prof Rakesh Kumar

Prof Rakesh Kumar is the Founder and President of the Breast Cancer in Young Women Foundation (USA), dedicated to vaddressing the distinct issues affecting young women with breast cancer. He also serves as the International Endowed Chair Professor at the Cancer Research Institute of the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences. Additionally, he holds adjunct professorships at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr Kumar earned his Ph.D. from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1984 and began his research career at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in January 1986. From 1988 to 2017, he held various academic and leadership positions —including faculty member, tenured professor, distinguished professor, endowed chair, department chair, and research leader—at esteemed institutions such as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. From 2017 to 2022, he served as the National Chair for Cancer Research for the Government of India and as a distinguished professor, continuing his innovative work in breast cancer research.

With nearly 40 years of research and professional experience, Dr. Kumar has made conceptual contributions to the field of cancer research (h-index 108, citations >50,000). He has authored over 325 peer-reviewed publications, edited or co-edited nine books, and delivered 290 invited lectures worldwide. His work has been featured on the covers of 18 major cancer journals and has been highlighted in institutional research reports of the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

A passionate educator and mentor, Dr. Kumar has guided 67 trainees throughout his career. He serves on the editorial boards of multiple leading cancer journals and has served on the editorial boards of 21 top cancer journals. His global reputation is further demonstrated by his participation in about 100 peer-review panels for cancer research funding in the US and internationally over the past 28 years.
