Title: These guidelines shall be known as ‘Guidelines for Institution of Medals, Awards & Scholarships by Individuals/institutions/organizations’. These guidelines shall come into force from the date of approval of the Board of Management of the University.
  1. The purpose for institution of Medals, Awards & Scholarships should be in consonance with the ‘Mission’ and ‘Vision’ of Swami Rama Himalayan University.
  2. The University may consider request for institution of Medals, Awards & Scholarships from the following applicants:
    1. Individuals (only Indian citizens):
      1. Any person whose proposal is received through the Promoting Society.
      2. Any member of the Board of Governors/ Board of Management.
      3. Alumni of the University.
      4. Any faculty member and staff member.
      5. Any family member of the deceased alumni/student/faculty member/staff member.
    2. Any prominent personality of the country, i.e. academician/ researcher/industrialist/corporate professional, who has made a significant contribution in his relevant field.
    3. Any institution/organization/corporate entity/society of professional bodies, other than religious and political organizations, who have made a significant contribution in their respective areas.
    4. Any foreign national or foreign entity subject to satisfying the conditions of the prevailing law of India on the subject.
  3. The applicant under clause 2.1 may apply for institution of medal/award/ scholarship in fond memory of his family member.
  4. For applicants under clause 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4, medal/award/scholarship could be named after a ‘Person of Prominence’ who has made a distinguished and significant contribution in his area.
  5. Merely applying by any of the categories, contained in clause 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 above, shall not be a sufficient ground for institution of medals, awards & scholarships. It shall be the prerogative of the University to accept or reject any request/application for institution of any medal, award or scholarship, without assigning any reason thereof.
  6. The medals, awards & scholarships shall be instituted based on the merit decided by the University.
  7. None of the medals/awards/scholarships shall be instituted and awarded based on religion, caste & creed and community. However, the eligibility for awarding medals/awards/scholarships to the recipients shall be as decided and approved by the University.
  8. The amount for institution of medals/awards/scholarships shall be as decided by the University from time-to-time.
  9. Once the University grants approval to the applicant for institution of medal/award/scholarship, the donor shall be advised to deposit the funds with the University.
  10. The money received by the University for each of the instituted medals/awards/scholarships shall be deposited in fixed deposits and will be treated as corpus. The interest earned on each fixed deposit shall be utilized by the University to defray expenses incurred towards the cost of the respective medal. Similarly, cash awards or scholarships shall be awarded out of the interest earned on the concerned fixed deposit. The University shall utilize part of the annual interest amount, earned on the fixed deposit, towards the cost of medal/award or disbursement of cash award/scholarship. The balance interest amount shall be added to the fixed deposit to increase the corpus.
  11. The first medal/award/scholarship will normally be awarded after accrual of one year interest on fixed deposit. However, the medal/award/ scholarship may be awarded before one year subject to the condition that the donor bears the cost of first medal/award/scholarship.
  12. After institution and awarding of medals/awards/scholarships, whenever the University in future feels that the fund is insufficient to carry out the purpose for which the corpus has been created, the donor will be advised to add more funds to the corpus.
  13. In case of refusal by the donor to increase the funds to the corpus, the University shall have the right to utilize the corpus for awarding medal/award/scholarship till the time funds are available in the corpus. Once the funds are exhausted, the instituted medal/award/scholarship shall stand withdrawn automatically.
  14. The University reserves the right to suspend or cancel and withdraw any of the instituted medal, award or scholarship without assigning any reason thereof.
  15. The University reserves the right to amend these Guidelines as and when required.
  16. In case of any dispute, decision of the competent authority of the University would be final and binding. However, all disputes related to this matter are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of courts of Uttarakhand.

International Endowed Chair Professor

Prof Rakesh Kumar

Prof Rakesh Kumar is the Founder and President of the Breast Cancer in Young Women Foundation (USA), dedicated to vaddressing the distinct issues affecting young women with breast cancer. He also serves as the International Endowed Chair Professor at the Cancer Research Institute of the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences. Additionally, he holds adjunct professorships at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr Kumar earned his Ph.D. from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1984 and began his research career at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in January 1986. From 1988 to 2017, he held various academic and leadership positions —including faculty member, tenured professor, distinguished professor, endowed chair, department chair, and research leader—at esteemed institutions such as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. From 2017 to 2022, he served as the National Chair for Cancer Research for the Government of India and as a distinguished professor, continuing his innovative work in breast cancer research.

With nearly 40 years of research and professional experience, Dr. Kumar has made conceptual contributions to the field of cancer research (h-index 108, citations >50,000). He has authored over 325 peer-reviewed publications, edited or co-edited nine books, and delivered 290 invited lectures worldwide. His work has been featured on the covers of 18 major cancer journals and has been highlighted in institutional research reports of the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

A passionate educator and mentor, Dr. Kumar has guided 67 trainees throughout his career. He serves on the editorial boards of multiple leading cancer journals and has served on the editorial boards of 21 top cancer journals. His global reputation is further demonstrated by his participation in about 100 peer-review panels for cancer research funding in the US and internationally over the past 28 years.

Dr. Kumar's innovative research has earned him numerous prestigious honors, including the Hinkle Society Faculty Award at Penn State University (1994), the Dalla/Fort Worth Living Legend Faculty Achievement Award in Basic Sciences (2004), the Ranbaxy Research Award (2006), and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Indian Scientists in Cancer Research (2013), among others. Dr. Kumar's pioneering research continues to have a profound influence on the fields of oncology and breast cancer, opening up new opportunities for biomedical scientists and trainees worldwide.
