  1. Short Title And Commencement
    1. These guidelines shall be called “Guidelines for SRHU – Junior Research Fellowship (SRHU-JRF) scheme” .
    2. It shall be deemed to have come into force on the date it is approved by the Board of Management of the Swami Rama Himalayan University.
  2. Words denoting the singular shall include the plural and also vice-versa.
  3. Words denoting any gender shall include all genders.
  4. Applicability
    The scheme of the SRHU-JRF is applicable for Ph.D. scholar who is not in receipt of any financial assistance from any source and is registered as Regular full-time Ph.D. scholar in various Academic Units of the Swami Rama Himalayan University.
  5. Eligibility
    1. Ph.D. research scholar shall be eligible for this Fellowship who has qualified either in the following tests:-
      1. National Eligibility Test-Junior Research Fellowship (NET-JRF) of UGC/UGC-CSIR;
      2. OR
      3. Any test organized by the University for Eligibility of this Fellowship for scholar who does not possess valid NET-JRF certificate.
    2. Ph.D. scholar, who has passed the stipulated course-work with minimum 60% and whose research synopsis has been duly approved by the Departmental Research Committee (DRC) of his respective subject areas, is eligible to apply for the SRHU-JRF.
    3. It is mandatory that the scholar should not be in any type of employment and should not be availing financial assistance from any other source.
    4. The scholar must be engaged full-time in the University for his respective Ph.D. work. Part-time Ph.D. scholar shall not be eligible for this fellowship.
  6. Selection Procedure
    1. Every year in the month of January and July, the Office of the Research & Ph.D. Cell shall invite applications from Ph.D. scholars who meet the eligibility criteria defined at clause (5) above.
    2. The shortlisted scholars shall have to appear before the duly constituted Selection Committee which will assess the strengths of the scholar in the areas of research, including Ph.D. research synopsis as approved by the DRC.
    3. The Selection Committee shall submit the duly signed merit list to the University for seeking approval of the competent authority of the University.
    4. The scholar shall not claim the fellowship as a right by merely fulfilling the eligibility criteria.
  7. Award & Duration
    1. The number of SRHU-JRFs and the quantum of fellowship amount shall be as decided by the University from time to time.
    2. The SRHU-JRF shall be awarded for the maximum period of 03 years or until submission of the Ph.D. thesis, whichever is earlier and shall not continue for any extended period. The fellowship to a scholar shall be applicable from the date of approval of his synopsis by the DRC.
  8. Suspension/Cancellation of Fellowship
    The Fellowship award is liable for suspension/cancellation in following cases:-
    1. Proven misconduct.
    2. Unsatisfactory progress report.
    3. Scholar furnishes misleading information or hides any information to claim eligibility for fellowship and is later found ineligible.
    4. Scholar taking unauthorized leave other than what is admissible.
    For keeping in mind the natural justice, the University shall afford an opportunity to the scholar concerned to justify his position.
  9. Recovery of Fellowship
    University shall recover the complete amount paid against the Fellowship in case:
    1. The Scholar furnishes misleading information or hides any information to claim eligibility for Fellowship and found ineligible in due course of time.
    2. The Scholar wishes to discontinue from the Ph.D. programme whatsoever reason.
  10. General Conditions for Award of Fellowship
    1. The daily attendance of the SRHU-JRF awardee will be mandatory and will be marked through the prescribed attendance system.
    2. During the Ph.D. programme, the SRHU-JRF awardee shall not be allowed to join any other project in any capacity.
    3. All the selected scholars for SRHU-JRF shall be required to execute legal agreement with the University to ensure recovery of Fellowship as contained in Clause (9) above.
  11. The University reserves the right to interpret, alter, amend, modify, cancel or withdraw any or all provision mentioned herein above in these guidelines without any notice.
  12. Notwithstanding anything stated in these Guidelines, for any unforeseen issues arising, and not covered by these Guidelines, or in the event of differences of interpretation, the Vice-Chancellor may take a decision, after obtaining the opinion/advice of a Committee constituted by the Vice Chancellor. The decision of the Vice-Chancellor shall be final and binding.

International Endowed Chair Professor

Prof Rakesh Kumar

Prof Rakesh Kumar is the Founder and President of the Breast Cancer in Young Women Foundation (USA), dedicated to vaddressing the distinct issues affecting young women with breast cancer. He also serves as the International Endowed Chair Professor at the Cancer Research Institute of the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences. Additionally, he holds adjunct professorships at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr Kumar earned his Ph.D. from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1984 and began his research career at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in January 1986. From 1988 to 2017, he held various academic and leadership positions —including faculty member, tenured professor, distinguished professor, endowed chair, department chair, and research leader—at esteemed institutions such as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. From 2017 to 2022, he served as the National Chair for Cancer Research for the Government of India and as a distinguished professor, continuing his innovative work in breast cancer research.

With nearly 40 years of research and professional experience, Dr. Kumar has made conceptual contributions to the field of cancer research (h-index 108, citations >50,000). He has authored over 325 peer-reviewed publications, edited or co-edited nine books, and delivered 290 invited lectures worldwide. His work has been featured on the covers of 18 major cancer journals and has been highlighted in institutional research reports of the MD Anderson Cancer Center.

A passionate educator and mentor, Dr. Kumar has guided 67 trainees throughout his career. He serves on the editorial boards of multiple leading cancer journals and has served on the editorial boards of 21 top cancer journals. His global reputation is further demonstrated by his participation in about 100 peer-review panels for cancer research funding in the US and internationally over the past 28 years.

Dr. Kumar's innovative research has earned him numerous prestigious honors, including the Hinkle Society Faculty Award at Penn State University (1994), the Dalla/Fort Worth Living Legend Faculty Achievement Award in Basic Sciences (2004), the Ranbaxy Research Award (2006), and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Indian Scientists in Cancer Research (2013), among others. Dr. Kumar's pioneering research continues to have a profound influence on the fields of oncology and breast cancer, opening up new opportunities for biomedical scientists and trainees worldwide.
