The Department of Pediatrics, Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU), organized Asthma Awareness Week from 4th May to 8th May 2026 with the theme “Every Breath Counts – Control Asthma, Prevent Attacks “. The aim of the program was spreading awareness regarding Pediatric asthma, promoting early diagnosis, and sensitizing the community about preventive and therapeutic measures for childhood asthma. The program was coordinated by Dr. (Prof) Sanober Wasim, Faculty Incharge Pediatric Asthma Clinic under the able guidance of Dr. (Prof) Anil Rawat, Head Department of Pediatrics.
The week-long program included asthma screening camps, free spirometry testing, awareness sessions, poster presentations, and community outreach activities conducted both within the hospital and at peripheral healthcare centres. Faculty members, resident doctors, healthcare workers, medical students, children, and caregivers actively participated in the activities.
The Asthma Awareness Week commenced with screening of children suspected to have asthma along with free spirometry testing at Pediatric Asthma Clinic OPD #19. Children presenting with recurrent cough, wheezing, and breathing difficulty were evaluated. Parents were counselled regarding symptom recognition, trigger avoidance, and regular follow-up.
A community outreach screening program was organized at RHTC Shyampur, Rishikesh. 76 Children underwent clinical evaluation and spirometry testing free of cost. Awareness regarding environmental triggers, pollution control, and importance of early treatment was provided.
A poster presentation competition focusing on childhood asthma awareness and prevention was organized for MBBS students and healthcare workers. Professor Principal Sir Dr. Ahmadulla Shariff. and Professor Dr. Rakhi served as judges for the event. The posters highlighted asthma symptoms, triggers, emergency signs, and preventive strategies. The activity was followed by judging and sensitization sessions for patients and attendants visiting the OPD area. The first prize in the poster competition was bagged by Arieka Raina, the second prize was awarded to Deshna Jain and Astha Garg, and the third prize went to Avni Garg and Ayush Kandal.
An asthma sensitization session was conducted in Ward 113 for admitted pediatric patients and caregivers. Demonstrations regarding inhaler techniques, nebulization, medication adherence, and emergency management of asthma attacks were conducted. The importance of avoiding triggers and maintaining regular treatment was emphasized.
The concluding day of Asthma Awareness Week included a free asthma camp and spirometry screening program at CHC, Doiwala. 30 Children from nearby communities were screened for asthma symptoms and provided counseling regarding disease management and preventive care.
The Asthma Awareness Week successfully enhanced awareness among children, parents, caregivers, and healthcare workers regarding pediatric asthma and its management. There was active participation by all faculty members including Dr. Anil Rawat, Dr. Alpa Gupta, Dr. Ashish Simalti, Dr. Sanober Wasim, Dr. Neerul Pandita, Dr. Nitika Agarwal, Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Dr. Jyoti Walia, Dr. Sonam Agarwal, Dr. Mandeep Khalsa, Dr. Talha Rehman, Dr. Pradeep, Dr. Mallika. A significant number of children benefited from free screening and spirometry services. The activities also helped in dispelling myths related to asthma and inhaler use while promoting early diagnosis and regular treatment adherence. The outreach activities at community healthcare centers further strengthened public awareness regarding pediatric respiratory health. The Department remains committed to organizing similar public health awareness initiatives in the future for improving child health and community well-being.
