Celebrating the World Intellectual Property Day at Swami Rama Himalayan University

Every 26 April, the World Intellectual Property Organization and the International Community celebrate World Intellectual Property Day to highlight the role that intellectual property (IP) rights play in encouraging innovation and creativity. Each year a theme is chosen to highlight contemporary issues. The theme for 2025 is “IP and music: Feel the beat of IP." Music is a universal form of creative expression and intellectual property rights play a pivotal role in supporting a vibrant and diverse music landscape. From the rhythms that invite us to dance, to the lyrics that echo our emotions, music enriches every aspect of our lives. In India, music is an integral part of cultural expression, with a rich heritage spanning classical, folk, and contemporary genres. The celebration of World IP Day with focus on Music signifies coming trends on copyrights, nation’s vibrant music industry, folklore music and traditional Hindustani Gharana music. In changing scenario with ChatGPT like tools making inroads, the role of IP specially copyright becomes crucial.

At Swami Ram Himalayn University, the day was celebrated in the form of a Panel discussions that focused on educating creators and entrepreneurs about the significance of IP rights in protecting their musical innovations as also freely expanding their reach in the global market without infringement. RJ Kaavya, a distinguished Radio Jockey, with a comprehensive 15-year experience in the radio industry; and Classical Vocalist Himanshu Darmora have been in talks with Dr Rajendra Dobhal, the Vice Chancellor of the University. About 300 participants witnessed and expressed their views that including Faculty, Researchers and Students. RJ Kaavya through his channel, "Uttar Ka Puttar," has garnered popularity not only within Uttarakhand but beyond its borders. The show "Ek Pahadi Aisa Bhi" has been showered with praises, marking it as a cherished digital production. Himanshu on the other hand, has invested on traditional music of northern areas of the Indian subcontinent, including the modern states of India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan

RJ Kaavya shared how contemporary singers like Honey Singh and Badshah claim their own IP in their songs by merging their name in the lyrics. Himanshu Darmora described the history of many music gharanas and produced classical music pieces which the gathering enjoyed and appreciated.
