Community Medicine - Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences

The Department of Community Medicine, HIMS, provides a unique platform for inter and cross-disciplinary research bringing Science to Medicine. Apart from bench-to-bedside, the department focuses on bedside-to-bench translation and extends it to the population/community level.

Programs offered are coupled with 6-9 months internship with premier organizations, viz., Medanta- The Medicity Delhi-NCR, MAX Healthcare, FORTIS, Sun Pharma, Cadilla, Zydus, etc., besides international internship. Faculty’s Bio and Health sciences Research published in the top 3-5% of science journals of the world have got us global recognition.

Research Thrust areas are Nutrition, Maternal & Child Health, Non-Communicable Disease surveillance, Molecular Epidemiology, Thyroid homeostasis, Iodine Deficiency disorders, DNA markers & Cervical Cancer, Bioinformatics: (Population-specific Data base, Drug designing, Clinical Data Management), and much more.

Community Outreach is integral to us. We keep a demographic record of the beneficiaries, conduct family surveys and hold health awareness camps. Identified as the Community Health Centre for National Health Programs. The department also has collaborations with ICMR, UNICEF, WHO, USAID, UNFPA, etc.

 

Teaching & Training

Student-centric pedagogy stimulates learning and a deep understanding of the subject.

Our academic activities are recognized as progressive and relevant with a focus on practical learning, innovation, skill development, and exposure to the latest advancements in Clinical Research / Epidemiology.

Students receive knowledge and skills through lessons in laboratories (wet and dry lab)/experiential field work and tutorials, guest lectures from industry experts, tutorials, visits to companies, workshops, seminars, inter-disciplinary programs & projects, small group activities, and individual discussions, selectively utilizing multimedia and digital platforms.

Students also get extensive exposure in specialist labs, conferences, seminars, special workshops, research-based projects, and assignments/field projects.

Besides theoretical knowledge students are in involved in Health Day celebrations as well as visits to renowned medical institutions like PGI Chandigarh, KGMU Lucknow, National Institute of Health and Family Welfare, ICMR in New Delhi, etc.

    • Understand and apply statistical methods and epidemiological concepts to analyze the causes of diseases and the current state of the most pressing health issues.
    • Examine situations that may have a negative impact on public health, such as environmental dangers and disease outbreaks, and develop a suitable plan to combat them.
