The Department
Started in 1995, Neurology is the first Neurological Centre in the Uttarakhand region. The Neurology Department provides comprehensive in-patient and out-patient neurological services, treating the full range of neurological disorders. The department is assisted by state-of-the-art Emergency & Trauma services treating around 1500 in-patients annually. Our well-established outpatient services has a footfall of 40,000 outpatients per year. The Neurology Department has developed sub-specialty interests in stroke, epilepsy, degenerative disorders, neuromuscular disorders and headache. The department is committed to providing excellence in neurological care through quality management, education and training of health care professionals. The department is well known for its academic excellence and inexpensive medical care in this region of the country. At present our team comprises of four renowned 4 neurologists.
Out - Patient Neurology Services
General neurology outpatient clinics
Out-patient services are offered to all patients with neurological disorders on all working days from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm. Currently Neurology OPD has three consultation chambers with all examination facilities. There is an adequate comfortable waiting area for the patients. Dedicated minor procedure room is attached to the OPD. One teaching room is available for the students.
All facilities are provided to common and uncommon neurological conditions including Headache, Epilepsy, Stroke, Movement Disorders, Neuroinfections, Demyelinating Neurological disorders, Degenerative Disorders, Neuromuscular disorders and other rare neurological diseases. Neurology OPD has support of well-equipped neurophysiology labs, neuropsychology and psychiatry services and neuro-rehabilitation facilities in the same area.

In- Patient Neurology Services
The department has a 30 bedded general neurology ward for its admitted patients. In addition, separate 8 bedded high dependency neurological unit supported by main ICU is available for critically ill patients. Department also enjoys the support of state of art central intensive care unit. Neurology ward has a side lab to perform various tests, room for minor procedures, resident doctor’s duty room and a teaching room.
The department admits around 120 patients every month from its OPD and emergency. All necessary facilities in place to manage variety of neurological disorders including stroke, status epilepticus, G B Syndrome, neuroinfections, myasthenia gravis, acute headache, dementia, movement disorders and chronic neurological conditions.
Facilities & Equipment
Well-equipped neurophysiology labs are installed which provide various neurodiagnostic procedures
- Neuromuscular lab provides comprehensive NCV/EMG Studies including RNS Test, facial nerve studies, evoked potential and event related potential tests.
- Digital EEG lab for routine diagnosis epileptic disorders.
- Video EEG lab provides prolonged EEG along with video monitoring for the diagnosis, classification of seizures.
- Sleep Lab is well equipped for stage3 sleep studies.
Neurology department at HIMS, SRHU is a referral Centre for electrophysiological tests. The department receives patients for diagnosis not only from Uttarakhand but also from other states.
Neurology Office & Library
Currently separate offices are available for all departmental faculty and clerks. Seminar room with audio visual facilities is available for teaching. Neuroscience Departmental Library has about 130 neurology and Neurosurgery books including latest textbooks. Library is subscribing to 6 International and three National Neurology Journals.
Teaching & Research
Faculties of neurology actively participate in teaching program of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. In addition, various seminars, grand rounds and workshops are also conducted. There are adequate faculty rooms, teaching rooms and seminar room for neurology teaching program. Seminar room is equipped with modern teaching aids like LCD projector. Department has library with all necessary books and reputed neurological journals.
Neurology department is actively participating in various research activities. It has completed various neuro-epidemiological ICMR funded project. A big ICMR funded epilepsy epidemiology study is in progress. There is also participation in guiding various students’ thesis and other research projects. Faculty members actively take part in national and regional conferences by presenting their research and as invited faculty. Research work is regularly published in national and international journals

- Intensive Care Unit – We have central intensive care unit with dedicated area for critically ill neurological patients. Our ICU is having state of the art facilities available which are run under intensive care specialist.
- Neuropathology Services – Department of pathology is well equipped with experienced and committed neuropathologists and all modern neuropathological test facilities for our patients.
- Neuro-surgery Department – Institute has well equipped Neurosurgerydepartment which is considered as one of the best neurosurgery care and training center. It offers world-class services for the management of neurosurgical problems such as Brain tumors, Aneurysms / Vascular pathology, Spine surgery & Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, Paediatric-Neurosurgery, Peripheral Nerve Surgery, Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery, Head Injury Services, Epilepsy Surgery and 24 x 7 Emergency services. Neurosurgery department has a 3-year M. Ch program.
- Nuclear Medicine – Department offers various nuclear scans like SPECT and DaT-SCAN. Soon we will be having PET Scan also which will be the first in the state of Uttarakhand.
- Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Services – The institute has college of physiotherapy with ongoing BPT and MPT training program. We have excellent team of neuro-physiotherapy faculty, occupational therapists, speech pathologists.
- Psychiatry Department – Department of Psychiatry and clinical psychology unit are the important associated services to support neurology training. They provide all diagnostic and treatment facilities including electroconvulsive therapy (Modified ECT), biofeedback, psychotherapy, behaviour therapy, occupational therapy, recreational therapy and music therapy.
- Radiodiagnosis Department – Himalayan Hospital has state of art Department of Radiodiagnosis well equipped with the latest equipment for accurate diagnosis and treatment including high-end MRI, Ultrafast CT scan, Cath Lab, Ultrasound, 1.5 T MRI, DSA and interventional radiology to support the department of Neurology.

He has special interest in neuro-epidemiology, Stroke and has conducted various community level projects on epilepsy, sleep disorders and non-communicable disorders.
Dr. Deepak Goel was awarded best clinician and best researcher awards from the university and awarded membership of the prestigious “National Academy of Medical Sciences”. He has completed many of the community projects on epilepsy funded by ICMR as principal investigator.
He has completed observership on acute stroke management and stroke rehabilitation from Maryland University, USA, on Epilepsy surgery from National Epilepsy center, Shizuoka Japan. He has also authored one Book titled as “Seizure in children step by step management notes”. He was elected as president of UP/UK Neuroscience society for the year 2017-18. He is a guest speaker in various national and international conferences.

Dr Manish Mittal has a brilliant academic career at school and college. He has undergone special Training in Epilepsy and EEG under guidance of Dr. R. Radhakrishnan (World renowned Epileptologist) from Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram. He is a Postgraduate teacher with numerous national and international publications and has organised several State and National Conferences. He is a member of Indian Stroke Association, Indian Epilepsy society, International headache society, London, UK and Movement disorder society, USA.
